Aluminum and steel cans should be placed in the bin that contains glass and plastic items. "Sharps" are items that can puncture or penatrate the skin, such as needles, razor blades, etc… Many people use sharps/needles to administer medication. Sharps are NOT accepted at the curbside, please DO NOT put sharps in recycling bin or regular trash.

Throwing away sharps can cause many problems:

  • They clog sewers and lift stations.
  • They end up at recycling centers.
  • They puncture solid waste containers and place workers along collection routes and at the landfill at risk of injury and/or disease.
They threaten public safety. Sharps can be contaminated with Hepatitis, HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) and other serious or fatal disease.
Indian River County Solid Waste Disposal District provides free "sharps" containers at any of the five convenience centers and the landfill. Other acceptable containers are coffee cans and bleach bottles. When the container is ¾ full, tape the lid on it with duct tape and clearly mark the container with the word "SHARPS". Take the container to any of the convenience centers, the landfill or the health department located at 1900 27th St. VB. And NEVER, NEVER, NEVER put "sharps" containers in your recycling bins or trash.

You may bring sharps/needles in appropriate container to the Heath Department for exchange for a new container. Or you may take full containers to any one of the five convenience centers or the landfill for proper disposal and to exchange for a new container.
